{"id":71,"date":"2008-02-26T22:48:51","date_gmt":"2008-02-27T05:48:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ambriente.com\/blog\/2008\/02\/26\/shaun-odell-at-susan-inglett\/"},"modified":"2008-02-26T22:54:55","modified_gmt":"2008-02-27T05:54:55","slug":"shaun-odell-at-susan-inglett","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ambriente.com\/blog\/2008\/02\/26\/shaun-odell-at-susan-inglett\/","title":{"rendered":"Shaun O&#8217;Dell at Susan Inglett"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Obsessing about the sun &#8211; it&#8217;s history, power, influence in relation to the history of the United States &#8211; Manifest Destiny, Native American genocide, slavery&#8230; has led Shuan O&#8217;Dell to create a series of drawings that are visually dynamic on view at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inglettgallery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Susan Inglett<\/a> in Chelsea.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambriente.com\/blog\/images\/2008\/odell_1.jpg\" alt=\"Shuan O'Dell drawing\" height=\"368\" width=\"530\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambriente.com\/blog\/images\/2008\/odell_1b.jpg\" alt=\"Shaun O'Dell drawing, detail\" height=\"385\" width=\"530\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The drawings at once bring to mind a diverse set of aesthetics from Aztec codices to traditional U.S. quilts conveying Quaker imagery to geometric abstraction but O&#8217;Dell manages to meld these different visual elements into works that invite the viewer to attempt to follow a narrative.  These are stories of travel, exploration and discovery.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambriente.com\/blog\/images\/2008\/odell_2.jpg\" alt=\"Shaun O'Dell drawing, detail\" height=\"385\" width=\"530\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambriente.com\/blog\/images\/2008\/odell_2a.jpg\" alt=\"Shaun O'Dell drawing, detail\" \/> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambriente.com\/blog\/images\/2008\/odell_2b.jpg\" alt=\"Shaun O'Dell drawing, detail\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambriente.com\/blog\/images\/2008\/odell_3.jpg\" alt=\"Shaun O'Dell drawing, detail\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambriente.com\/blog\/images\/2008\/odell_3a.jpg\" alt=\"Shaun O'Dell drawing, detail\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As O&#8217;Dell considered his personal history with the sun.  He asked others to write him with their very earliest memory of the sun.  He then took these memories to create a sun drawing pictured below.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ambriente.com\/blog\/images\/2008\/odell_4.jpg\" alt=\"Shaun O'Dell drawing, detail\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And in a small room at the rear of the gallery, O&#8217;Dell inserted a video of the ball of fire burning.  It&#8217;s an incredible image, unfortunately it doesn&#8217;t work with the rest of the exhibition and I believe detracts from the drawings, because it leaves an odd punctuation.
